Why Summer Improv Adventure Camp is the Healthy Choice for Children

There are so many reasons why Improv is a healthy choice for children. In today’s world, where tablets, iPads, and assessment-based teaching have become the norm, empathy and creativity have taken a backseat. Children seem to be curious about less and less and are more and more hesitant to take risks - even in their play. Improv and the games we play are both tools and a philosophy that encourage children to create brave spaces of exploration.

Improv improves communication skills

Through improv, children practice speaking clearly, listening actively, and responding appropriately, which strengthens their verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

Improv teaches teamwork and collaboration.

Since we play ensemble games, children experience how to find their voices though working together and sharing ideas. This fosters confidence through supporting others (“yes, and!) Our goal is to create a judgement-free atmosphere.

Children naturally problem solve.

Improv often involves coming up with quick solutions to unexpected situations. This helps children develop critical thinking as they need to adapt to what’s happening around them.

Improv games require kids to be aware of their own feelings and the feelings of others, helping them develop empathy and emotional awareness.

In improv, it's crucial to pay attention to what others are saying or doing, which helps children sharpen their focus and listening skills.

Improv allows children to experiment and make mistakes in a low-pressure environment (every mistake is a gift!) helping them learn how to manage mistakes and embrace failure without fear. You'll see for yourself in our weekly demonstrations on Fridays at 3pm to celebrate the end of each camp.

A morning spent involved in these kinds of activities can be exhilarating and exhausting. That’s why some fun in the sun in the Chase Park Pool will be part of the camp equation. Outdoor ensemble games and swimming in the pool (with lifeguards on duty and counselors in the water!) will fill up afternoons. Then the day will wind down with more ensemble activities. We don’t know of any other performance camps that can boast both of these types of summer activities!
